Rianne ten Veen, van Green Creation en lid van ALF NL, kijkt terug op haar tweede bezoek aan de Initiatives of Change (IofC) fora in Caux. Deze locatie herinnert aan de gevolgen van dehumanisering en de mogelijkheid van leven na conflict. Dit jaar was de uitwisseling van ideeën extra waardevol gezien de actuele ontwikkelingen in Nederland.
Tijdens het Inner Development Goals (IDG) Forum en het Democracy Forum kwamen 200 deelnemers uit 50 landen samen voor leerzame sessies en samenwerking. Deelnemers waardeerden de nieuwsgierigheid naar elkaar, wat leidde tot betekenisvolle gesprekken.
Ten Veen’s belangrijkste inzicht was het belang van innerlijke groei als aanvulling op de duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelen (SDG’s). Ze koppelde dit aan het begrip ‘jihad’, dat vaak verkeerd wordt begrepen als oorlogvoering, maar eigenlijk draait om innerlijke strijd tegen slechte gewoonten.
Op het Democracy Forum werd de kwetsbaarheid van democratie benadrukt, met waarschuwingen van deelnemers uit landen waar politiek verwaarloosd werd. Ten Veen realiseerde zich dat burgermaatschappij ook binnen Europa versterking nodig heeft.
Met nieuwe energie keerde ze terug om zich in te zetten voor Fahm Home, een centrum voor dialoog en reflectie dat binnenkort in Nederland opent. Fahm, Arabisch voor ‘begrip’, is volgens haar essentieel. Ze nodigt ALF NL-leden uit om samen plannen te maken.
“Samen is een mooiere wereld mogelijk,” aldus Ten Veen, die zich blijft inzetten voor vrede en begrip onder de naam Green Creation.

Rianne ten Veen of Green Creation and a member of ALF NL reflects on her second visit to the Initiatives of Change (IofC) forums in Caux. The location serves as a reminder of the consequences of dehumanisation and the possibility of life after conflict. This year, the exchange of ideas was particularly valuable in light of current developments in the Netherlands.
During the Inner Development Goals (IDG) Forum and the Democracy Forum, 200 participants from 50 countries came together for learning sessions and collaboration. Participants valued the curiosity shown towards one another, which led to meaningful conversations.
Ten Veen’s main insight was the importance of inner development as a complement to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She connected this to the concept of ‘jihad’, which is often misunderstood as warfare but actually refers to an inner struggle against negative habits.
At the Democracy Forum, the vulnerability of democracy was emphasised, with participants from countries where politics had been neglected issuing warnings. Ten Veen realised that civil society also needs strengthening within Europe.
She returned with renewed energy to contribute to Fahm Home, a centre for dialogue and reflection that will soon open in the Netherlands. Fahm, Arabic for ‘understanding’, is essential in her view. She invites ALF NL members to work together on plans.
