Free Press Unlimited Calls for Greater Protection of Journalists During Free Press Live 2024
On 21 October, Free Press Live 2024 took place in The Hague, organised by Free Press Unlimited. The event, themed “Media: a lifeline in times of conflict,” focused on the crucial role of the media in crisis areas and the dangers faced by journalists. Panel discussions with international journalists and experts highlighted the challenges of reporting from conflict zones and discussed how the international community can support media organisations under threat.
The situation in Palestine was a central focus, where a record number of journalists were killed this year. Free Press Unlimited reports that at least 128 journalists have been killed, while the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate reports as many as 167. Many were clearly identifiable as members of the press, suggesting that they may have been deliberately targeted. The organisation is calling for urgent international attention to their protection and launched a petition calling for safe passage and medical assistance for injured journalists in Gaza.
The event also featured the presentation of the Free Press Awards, including awards for ‘Newcomer of the Year’ and ‘Most Resilient Journalist’.
