Conny Groot van CultuurGeneratie heeft de afgelopen weken samen met andere vrijwilligers bij de Tent of Nations van de familie Nassar in Bethlehem doorgebracht. Op 19 juli schreef ze: “Elke dag voel ik me meer gemotiveerd. Het is onvoorstelbaar wat hier gebeurt. Ik wist dit al, maar het is toch anders om van dichtbij mee te maken hoe de mensen hier worden gewurgd.” De familie Nassar bezit juridisch waterdichte eigendomspapieren, erkend door de hoge raad van Israël, maar wordt dagelijks geconfronteerd met intimidatie, geweld, en vernielingen door de illegale settlement Neve Daniël. Ondanks hun moed worden ze al 33 jaar van rechtbank naar rechtbank gestuurd, wat financieel en emotioneel uitputtend is. De recente uitstel van een zitting bij de Hoge Raad versterkt hun angst. Dankzij hun communicatieve vaardigheden krijgt de protestant Lutherse familie steun van kerken, personen, en NGO’s wereldwijd, waaronder de Nederlandse stichting Tent of Nations. Grote groepen vrijwilligers helpen de familie op hun terrein en fungeren als ‘protective presence’ tegen de settlers. De situatie van de familie Nassar krijgt aandacht van media en politici, maar er is meer politieke druk nodig op Israël. Conny Groot of CultuurGeneratie has spent the past few weeks volunteering alongside others at the Tent of Nations of the Nassar family in Bethlehem. On 19 July, she wrote: “Every day I feel more motivated. It is unimaginable what is happening here. I already knew about this, but it is different to experience up close how the people here are being strangled.” The Nassar family has legally sound property documents, recognised by the Supreme Court of Israel, but faces daily intimidation, violence, and destruction by the illegal settlement of Neve Daniël. Despite their courage, they have been sent from one court to another for 33 years, which has been financially and emotionally exhausting. The recent postponement of a hearing at the Supreme Court has heightened their fears. Thanks to their communication skills, the Protestant Lutheran family receives support from churches, individuals, and NGOs around the world, including the Dutch Tent of Nations Foundation. Large groups of volunteers help the family on their land and serve as a “protective presence” against settlers. The situation of the Nassar family receives attention from the media and politicians, but greater political pressure on Israel is needed. Staying at Tent of Nations not only provides support to the family, but also offers new insights into the difficult situation faced by Palestinians.
